Chet Helms was an American music promoter and manager turned art dealer who was based in the San Francisco Bay Area for decades. Originally from Texas, Helms launched a successful career in music in the 1960s amid the cultural revolution that was underway in and around San Francisco’s Height Ashbury district. In 1980, he turned his attention to art, specifically 20th century American art, and opened Atelier Dore, a San Francisco art gallery, with his brother, John Helms.
