Born in Newport, Rhode Island, Peter Shoemaker became a painter in abstract styles. His early painting focused on large color areas with automatist calligraphy that reflected the teaching of William Hayter, who was a guest instructor at the California School of Fine Arts in the late 1940s.

Later, Shoemaker’s abstraction was organic shapes with recognizable landscape images.
